Setting Boundaries: Protecting Your Time, Energy, and Well-Being
Date:Monday September 8, 2025

Boundaries can be difficult to set in a profession rooted in service. But without them, it’s easy to lose your sense of control, burnout faster, and feel disconnected from life outside the job. Setting clear, healthy boundaries helps preserve your energy and resilience.
Why Boundaries Matter
Boundaries are not about saying “no” to the job—they’re about saying “yes” to your own well-being. They protect your time, relationships, and mental space, especially when work demands are high.
Common Boundary Challenges:
- Being constantly “on call” or reachable
- Saying yes to extra shifts when you’re already exhausted
- Carrying emotional weight home without tools to release it
Strategies for Setting Boundaries:
- Protect your off-hours: Communicate when you’re not available and stick to it
- Create transition rituals between work and home (change clothes, take a walk, listen to music)
- Say no when needed—respectfully and firmly—without guilt
- Limit work talk in your personal time unless it’s helpful or supportive
Support from Others
Boundaries are easier to maintain when you have accountability. Let peers, family, or supervisors know your limits. Most will respect them if you’re clear and consistent.
